Lectionary Theme: Beginning of Fast of the Apostles: Call and commission to be Christ’s Disciples (4th Sunday after Pentecost)

  •

    1. The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,

    2. to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of King Josiah son of Amon of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

    3. It came also in the days of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah, and until the end of the eleventh year of King Zedekiah son of Josiah of Judah, until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month. Jeremiah’s Call and Commission

    4. Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,

    5. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

    6. Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.”

    7. But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you.

    8. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”

    9. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, “Now I have put my words in your mouth.

    10. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

    11. The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

    12. Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

    1. Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart.

    2. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

    3. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.

    4. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

    5. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake.

    6. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

    10. Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” He answered, “Here I am, Lord.”

    11. The Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying,

    12. and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”

    13. But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem;

    14. and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.”

    15. But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel;

    16. I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”

    17. So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

    17. From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Jesus Calls the First Disciples

    18. As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishers.

    19. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”

    20. Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

    21. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.

    22. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Jesus Ministers to Crowds of People
